Virginia Star Quality Initiative

Why does it matter?
With the Virginia Star Quality Initiative, our state is rating the quality of early learning centers across the Peninsula. Each star a center earns (up to five) shows how far it has gone beyond minimum licensing standards.
This voluntary rating and improvement system lets parents make an informed decision when choosing child care, and also helps centers improve their services by learning from highly skilled mentors and professionals.
How does it work?
Stars are awarded (one to five) to programs based on achievement in four quality standards:
1) Education, qualifications and training of teaching staff
2) Interactions between teachers and students
3) Staff to child ratios and classroom group sizes
4) Learning environment and instructional practices
